Lot 260 Charles Guiteau
Original 4 x 6.25 cabinet photo by C. M. Bell, signed in the lower border in black ink. Interesting information printed on the reverse reads, “The negative from which this photograph is taken was made personally by me in the jail in the city of Washington on February 6, 1882, for Charles Guiteau, and I warn all persons not to infringe upon the copyright.” In very good condition, with scattered surface marks and spotting to image and Guiteau’s signature faded and very light, but legible up close. Even after the sentencing, Guiteau tried to cash in on his new-found celebrity. He tried to sell the suit he shot Garfield in for $100; he also sold his autographs or autographed pictures ($9 a dozen, advertised in local newspapers).
